Energy Efficiency

ENERGY STAR partnerOur warm edge spacer system creates energy-efficient, water- and air-resistant doorlites.

Child & Pet Friendly

Children and pets can be hard on blinds. Since our internal blinds are sealed between glass, children and pets are protected from dangling cords. Unlike their conventional counterparts, door blinds between glass are protected from excited pets, curious toddlers, and the occasional errant rubber ball.

Learn About   Wood Door Blinds

Because of their popularity with home improvement channels and custom home builders, the enclosed door blind trend has spread like wildfire over the last few years. Many builders or homeowners will choose a door with blinds built in.

Patio doors with internal blinds can be a simple and elegant solution for anyone’s construction or renovation needs.  While there are many benefits, pricing can be an issue—higher quality costs more.  Thus, one needs to know exactly what to look for and where to shop to get the best deal.

Construction & Benefits of Patio Entry  Doors with Built-In Blinds

The basic design of internal-blind doors features a thin-slatted Venetian mechanism or Roman shade sandwiched between two glass panes.  The panes are sealed in the frame.  Sometimes, plain air is left sealed inside.  More often, though, a vacuum is applied, removing any remaining air, and an inert gas, such as argon, is pumped in.One advantage is that the gas trapped inside provides an insulating barrier, cutting down on a home’s heating and cooling costs.  Another is that, being in a sealed environment, the blinds inside never need cleaning. A final benefit is that integrated blinds won’t get in the way of sliding mechanisms, giving a sleeker look to a room.

Hinged wood exterior  Doors  With Blinds Between the glass

Units with built-in blinds can be found in sliding versions (that run on a track) or hinged ones.  Aesthetics are important, and some functionality might be gained or lost dependent upon which style one chooses. It is important, then, to look at both types and decide which is better.

Hinged doors date to ancient times.  They are the simpler to install and cheaper (versus sliding ones).  However, the “sweep” of a swinging unit requires clear floor space for opening and closing, and the hinge hardware and the door itself are plainly visible (instead of being neatly tucked away in a wall or telescoped).

Obviously these swing-outs are classy and timeless.  Plus, the internal blinds don’t have to be cleaned, nor do they rattle every time the door is opened or closed (as in ones with free hanging shades or slatted blinds mounted on their faces).

wood  patio doors take up less space as they are either concealed inside a wall when opened (as in the “pocket” style) or one is slid over the face of its mate.  This is a very neat and modern look.  However, these can only work if there is enough room for runner tracks to be put in place, or by having walls thick enough to house the units in their “open” position.  And sliding ones are more costly than hinged many times.

One of the biggest downsides of wood doors is that standard Venetian blinds can’t be mounted on them effectively.  They get caught between the doors resulting in damage.  Those with integrated shading do not have this problem; this leads to more design options when planning how to spruce up a patio entrance.
